RNIB and Postcode Lottery
Since 2018, players of the Postcode Lottery have raised over £15.4m to support our vital work.
Players are helping us to trial innovation and interventions, support vital research, and deliver services that help people with sight loss live independently and stay connected.
Maureen’s story: How RNIB helped her stay independent after sight loss
Maureen lost her sight very suddenly. “It was a huge shock,” she says. “It was almost overnight that I went from being a sighted person, to a blind person”.
Feeling overwhelmed, Maureen contacted the RNIB Helpline. She was put in touch with RNIB’s digital skills team, who helped her learn how technology could support her day-to-day life.
“Before I phoned the RNIB Helpline, I was completely lost,” Maureen explains. “I had no idea what I would be able to do or how to achieve that”.
With support, Maureen learned how to use technology to manage everyday tasks, such as identifying items at home or reading letters that arrived through the post. One of the biggest revelations came when she learned how to use a smart speaker to access RNIB Talking Books. “Books have always been very important to me,” she says. “Using a smart speaker to open Talking Books for me was a great step forward to being able to read again.”
Maureen adds: “The RNIB Helpline made a huge difference to me. I don’t know what I expected, but what I got, was life changing.”

How Postcode Lottery works
- Postcode Lottery manages lotteries on behalf of 20 Postcode Trusts. People play with their chosen postcodes for a chance to win cash prizes.
- A minimum of 32 percent from each subscription goes directly to charities and good causes in Britain and internationally. Players have raised more than £1.7 billion to date. The Postcode Lottery website has details of the charities and good causes which are promoting and benefitting from the lottery draws.
