Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Support Service

The service works with educational settings to support them in developing the skills needed to overcome barriers for the inclusion of children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities.

We provide advice, assessment and training to all early years settings, mainstream, and special schools, the local authority, other professionals and parents/carers on all matters relating to the special educational needs of individual children and young people.

The team consists of a service manager, specialist co-ordinators, specialist advisory teachers, special support assistants, speech and language therapists and a mobility and independence officer.

All advisory teachers for children and young people with a Visual Impairment (VI) have a mandatory qualification to teach children and young people with VI. There is also a commissioned service from Guide Dogs for the Blind to develop independence and mobility skills.
