Training helps increase awareness and understanding of sight loss whilst ensuring staff have the necessary tools and knowledge to offer the best possible personalised care and support.
Our courses are externally evaluated and endorsed by Skills for Care. We also offer a number of CPD-accredited courses.

Our courses
We offer a range of courses on sight loss, and specialise in training for professionals working with older people or those with complex needs.
Our courses can be delivered online, or in-house at your organisation and can be adapted to a time frame best for you.
Bespoke training
This can be designed and delivered to meet your team's needs or an individual service user’s requirement. As well as tailoring content for the session, we can offer vision and autism or vision and stroke training.

eLearning
Our digital platform, Learning Choices, offers a wide range of courses, with topics such as learning disability, dementia, assistive technology and low vision. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information.
Sight Loss Awareness
This free online module is designed for eye care professionals and anyone supporting people with sight loss. The 3-part course covers the difficulties people with different eye conditions may have, attitudes and assumptions, daily living aids, assistive technology, and the range of support available. Around 1.5 hours to complete.

A Holistic Approach to Low Vision
This free online module is aimed at professionals either studying or new to working in low vision services. The 6-part course covers subjects including assessment of needs, visual function, target setting, magnification aids, visual strategies, report writing and multidisciplinary working. Around 2 hours to complete.

Free online resources
We provide a range of free online resources to support your self-directed learning. There are top tip cards, good practice guides, podcasts and booklets relating to sight loss and older people, learning disabilities and complex needs. You can find these on Social care professionals
Open Badges
We offer a range of free digital badges which you can use as evidence of self-directed or informal learning using our resources. We have a selection on the Scottish Social Services Council website: www.badges.sssc.uk.com/ – search for Royal National Institute of Blind People in the list of issuers.
Online training from RNIB
Our training programme for the 2024-2025 academic year is as varied as ever – there’s something for everyone and everyone is welcome whatever your role in working with a child or young person with vision impairment.
Events up to the end of the 24/25 academic year are open for bookings now.
RNIB online events are still being delivered free of charge.
Exam Information Exchange – adult support in assessments
Wednesday 19 March 2025, 4pm – 4.40 pm
An opportunity for education professionals to discuss and ask questions about the use of a scribe, reader, or practical assistant to support children with vision impairment in assessments. Unlike the other CPD sessions, it does not include a formal presentation. Instead, it offers an opportunity for informal discussion, peer support and sharing of information and best practice.
Producing accessible resources
Thursday 27 March 2025, 4 pm – 5.30 pm
We’ll be revisiting Styles in Microsoft Word to look at using templates, getting expert advice on producing accessible graphs and charts, and looking at making PowerPoints more accessible.
Wellbeing
Wednesday 7 May 2025, 4 pm – 5.30 pm
Focusing on best practice for supporting the wellbeing of children and young people with vision impairment.
Supporting children with VI and complex needs (3)
Monday 12 May 2025, 4 pm – 5.30 pm
The last of three sessions for this academic year delivered in partnership with experts from Sense. The focus will be on the teenage years and beyond, and building emotional resilience.
Braille network (2) – supporting the development of braille literacy – part of Braille 200
Tuesday 10 June 2025, 4 pm – 5.30 pm
To tie in with the Braille 200 celebrations of this thriving medium, we’ll be focusing on working with young learners to empower them and enhance their access to education and life through teaching braille.
