What is Braille 200?
To celebrate braille’s two hundredth anniversary, we’re celebrating Braille 200 from September 2024 until August 2025 and inviting everyone to join us in marking this huge milestone for the blind and partially sighted community.

There’s lots of ways you can get involved with Braille 200 – from learning about braille to coming along to one of our events.
Learn more about braille
Braille is a tactile written code that uses patterns of raised dots. It’s designed to be read by fingers rather than eyes and has empowered blind and partially sighted people to read, write and access information for 200 years. Braille provides an engaging, tactile reading experience with unique sensations – which other accessible formats, such as audio, cannot.
Whether you want to learn braille or just find out more about it, we have resources and helpful advice to guide you at every step of your journey with braille.
Join our Braille 200 launch event at the British Library
On Tuesday, 26 November 2024 RNIB along with their event partner, The British Library, are hosting an official launch event celebrating 200 years of the power of braille. This event takes place from 7.30pm – 9pm.
We’re honoured to welcome a distinguished panel of special guests, who will delve into the rich history of braille and debate its promising future.

This event will be live streamed from the venue to make sure it is as inclusive as possible. Join us from the comfort of home for an evening exploring braille’s past, present and exciting future.
