World Sight Day 2024
Today, Thursday 10 October 2024, is World Sight and we have some eye-opening news to share! New research by RNIB reveals that by 2035, the number of people in the UK living with sight loss will increase by a staggering 27%. This means that an estimated 2.8 million people across the UK will be affected, with one in five experiencing sight loss in their lifetime.
In addition, the number of people with severe sight loss or those registered as blind is expected to rise by 29%, from 298,000 in 2022 to 379,000 in 2035. This alarming trend is driven by factors such as increased life expectancy, an ageing population, demographic changes, longer waiting times for diagnosis and treatment, and a rise in diabetes cases.
To combat this, we are calling on the UK Government to prioritise eye health. In England, we urge the Government to develop a National Eye Care Plan and we, with partners across the sector, have developed the eye care support pathway for the NHS, social care organisations, the third sector and the public to use to support the transformation of eye care and eye services.
We also want to remind everyone to take care of their eyes by attending regular eye tests every two years, even if there are no changes in vision.
Regular eye checks can detect early signs of sight-threatening conditions, and early detection and timely treatment can help preserve sight and prevent avoidable sight loss.
Let's raise awareness about the assistance and advice on living with sight loss and symptoms of sight conditions that can lead to sight loss, including age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
Together, we can make a difference and ensure that everyone gets the right support at the right time.
