Mural for the new Disney series Daredevil

RNIB and Disney have unveiled a striking mural of “Daredevil: Born Again” adversaries Daredevil (Matt Murdock) and Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) today at Manchester’s Corn Exchange. The mural was created by artist Insane51 in his signature ‘double exposure’ style, meaning it can be viewed through red and blue lenses and the naked eye, producing different images which are inspired by the duality of the show’s central rivalry, as well as Daredevil’s inner moral conflict.

A unique ‘double exposure’ mural has been unveiled in Manchester’s Corn Exchange to mark the release of “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+.

The ‘double exposure’ style used by artist Insane51 allows for three different perspectives of the image: through a red lens, a blue lens and through the naked eye. For “Daredevil: Born Again”, this illustrates the show’s lead rivals, Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and the way in which their stark opposition is exactly what connects them.

This dynamic mural represents the duality of “Daredevil: Born Again”, portraying Matt Murdock, or Daredevil, and Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, and their complex battle against each other and themselves. The fiery red is inspired by Matt Murdock’s struggle to move forward without the weight of his violent past. The cold blue represents Fisk’s former life of corruption that he is trying to leave behind.

Insane51 spoke on his latest work saying, "As a huge fan of Daredevil, working on this mural was an incredible experience for me. I still remember seeing Daredevil on my screen for the first time when I was 10, and now, getting to bring my own artistic vision to this character feels surreal.

It’s amazing to see how my art style connects with the show’s themes, and I love that people will be able to engage with this piece not just visually, but also on a tactile and auditory level.

Bringing this new interactive element into my work was something I hadn’t done before, and that made the whole process even more exciting."

Created in collaboration with RNIB, this mural features a tactile version of the work, and audio description that can be accessed by scanning a NaviLens code, so this artwork can be engaged with on multiple levels making it more accessible to those with sight loss.

When speaking about the mural, Sonali Rai, Media, Culture and Immersive Technologies Senior Manager at RNIB, said, “A show about a blind superhero is the perfect catalyst for making public art more inclusive. This is an exciting opportunity to ensure that incredible artwork can be experienced by everyone, and we hope it sets a precedent for accessibility to become a standard in public art.”

In Marvel Television’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavours in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.

The artwork will be open to the public for a limited time, displayed in Manchester’s Corn Exchange, on Fennel Street, from 17th March.
