Yahya’s story: How getting active has opened new doors
When Yahya found the right jiu-jitsu club for him, he was immediately hooked.
Yahya has age-related macular degeneration with only limited peripheral vision, so wanted to find an activity which could be adapted for him. With the support of his club and its members, he’s now built his confidence and self-belief to try even more activities. This is his story.

How to take part in jui-jitsu
Jiu-jitsu is a martial arts activity that can be easily adapted for blind and partially sighted people. The main difference is that participants start gripped together, whereas usually, they would start apart.
The aim is to grapple with each other and try and get your opponent into certain positions, with the player with the highest number of points being the winner.
Jiu-jitsu is an indoor sport which you take part in as an individual. But it’s often practiced in a group class, so very likely your training partners could end up becoming your friends!
The individual nature of it also means you can really work on your skills and build your confidence with full focus on your own performance. Alternatively, you can take it less competitively and just enjoy learning new skills and putting them into practice.
