Find an accredited sight loss counsellor in the UK

Living with sight loss can be difficult, so it's important to take care of your mental wellbeing when you feel overwhelmed or just need a bit of extra support. Talking to someone about your thoughts and feelings surrounding your diagnosis can help with your emotional wellbeing.

Accredited sight loss counsellors are specifically trained to work with people with sight loss. They understand the emotional impact of sight loss and the nuances of each person's experience. They also understand the experiences that someone with sight loss has with health and social care systems.

Accredited sight loss counsellors provide an accessible counselling practice space and will produce counselling information in accessible formats.

Please note we are NOT an emergency service. If you or a client you are referring is in crisis and requires immediate care, please contact your local crisis team or NHS 111. If someone’s life is at risk or you feel you cannot keep yourself or someone else safe, contact NHS 999.

If you are in crisis and just need someone to talk to please contact Samaritans on 116 123 or [email protected].

If you need practical support and advice, please call the RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999. We're open 8am – 8pm on weekdays and 9am – 1pm on Saturdays. Email us at [email protected] or say: "Alexa, call RNIB Helpline".

The accreditation process

The aim of the accreditation qualification is to increase capacity of research-informed counsellors who are specifically trained to work with clients with sight loss in the UK. The accreditation process starts with an application for a two-day course. This course is designed for qualified practitioners to help with better understanding how to support clients who have sight loss.

After the training, participants need to submit a reflective plan demonstrating their learning and outlining their future steps to support clients with sight loss. Successful completion of this leads towards a Counselling for Sight Loss Accreditation qualification.

If you have any enquiries regarding Accreditation Scheme, please contact Emma Gwynne (Accreditation Officer) at [email protected].
