RNIB supporter receptions
Summary: Receptions across the UK in 2008-2009.
Receptions give us the chance to meet our supporters and tell them more about the services we provide for people with sight problems. To do this, we are joined by a range of speakers including representatives from RNIB Talking Books and RNIB Talk and Support, and experts in eye health, welfare rights, audio description, transcription and campaigning.
Making a real difference

Without the generosity of our supporters we would not be able to continue to provide the vital support and services for people whose lives have been devastated by sight loss. With your help RNIB continues to make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people.
Dr and Mrs Gallagher attended a reception in Manchester, and Dr Gallagher, who is an RNIB Talking Book customer, said:
“I enjoy receiving Talking Books and have always been thankful for RNIB, but our lives have been transformed because of the information we were given at the reception. We are now receiving Attendance Allowance, which allows us to enjoy our leisure time more. We are getting so much pleasure from audio description via Sky and also now enjoy regular audio described trips to the Exchange Theatre in Manchester, which my wife and I can now both fully enjoy together.”

Hatfield House

On a sunny spring day we welcomed supporters to a reception in the splendid surroundings of Hatfield House. Steeped in history, Hatfield has been home to the aristocracy for centuries. Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood at Hatfield and it was there that she first heard for her accession to the throne.
On approaching the impressive house along the sweeping driveway our supporters felt this was going to be a very special event and they weren’t disappointed. Presentations were given by several of RNIB’s crucial services including the RNIB Talking Book Service, Wills and Legacies Advisory Service and Talk and Support. Guests took the opportunity to ask questions and talk to staff about RNIB’s work.
One guest shared her thoughts on the reception with us:
“The weather was fine. The house and grounds were beautiful. The lecturers were articulate, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The staff were attentive and helpful, an inspiring and refreshing change. Congratulations for producing such a well thought out morning”
Reactions to RNIB receptions
The following was taken with permission from a letter from a reception attendee:
"My husband and I attended the RNIB reception yesterday and would like to say thank you for a very informative morning and a delightful lunch.
It was very good to hear just how the talking books are made etc. My husband is devoted to them and now we know how you manage to get them back to him so quickly and yes he has been sent authors in the past that he would not have bothered with before but now really appreciates them.
We will certainly now be using Audio Description on our DVDs etc, which we were not aware of before, all in all a very informative day. Thank you for inviting us.
We are considering leaving a legacy as we really appreciate all the help RNIB has given my husband since his sight loss."

Jill's story - Jill lost her sight 12 years ago at the age of 19. “The experience left me feeling isolated. I often felt like my life was pointless." Now, as a presenter on Insight Radio, she uses her experiences to help others. “My prayer is that what we do helps those who are going through sight loss. Even the tiniest piece of information can make a huge difference. If my show can help do that, then my journey has not been in vain.” Jill's full story
