The UK Vision Strategy is an amazing opportunity for all health and social care professionals to work together to transform eye health and sight loss services in the UK. Launched in 2008, this initiative is led by RNIB in partnership with organisations across the sector.
Why is it needed?
Sight loss is a growing problem. It currently affects about two million people in the UK, and these figures are set to double by 2020. The need for transformation is very clear.
The UK Vision Strategy was formed from a desire to reduce all avoidable blindness by the year 2020 and to produce a unified framework for action on all issues relating to vision.
About the strategy
The UK Vision Strategy has been developed in response to the World Health Assembly VISION 2020 resolution to reduce avoidable blindness by the year 2020 and improve support and services for blind and partially sighted people.
The strategy has three overall aims, around which work is structured:
-
Improving the eye health of the people of the UK
-
Eliminating avoidable sight loss and delivering excellent support for people with sight loss
-
Supporting inclusion, participation and independence for people with sight loss.
