In word processing accessibility is not difficult using modern day software and there are numerous benefits to be gained not just for blind and partially sighted people. The primary purpose of word processing is to convey information so presenting your information in a more accessible way will enable you to reach a much wider audience.

Including accessibility into the design of your documents has additional benefits if you need to produce the same information in any alternative formats such as large print, braille or DAISY.

Putting on the style!

One of the most common accessibility issues with word processed documents is also one of the simplest to correct. Using styling you can quickly make your headings and sub headings navigable with accessibility software such as screen readers. Properly styled documents also lend themselves to effective conversion to other formats. Once you have experienced how quick and easy it is to apply your own styles to documents you won't ever want to go back to purely visual formatting!

What about layout and design?

Modern word processors give almost unlimited control over the layout and design of your documents. Text and graphical elements such as font styles and images can be readily incorporated into your documents.

Find out how to decide which fonts are likely to be more accessible than others. Discover how the basics of effective layout and design for accessibility will also help to improve the overall look of your documents.

Turning the tables

Learn how to quickly turn your tables into accessible content by following a few simple recommendations. Tables are a useful addition to the facilities offered by most word processors. Up to date versions of the leading screen reader and magnification products are fully able to access properly formatted tables within word processed documents.

Additional information is also available on the Word documents and ODF pages.
