Progression Programmes at RNIB College

We offer a choice of two progression programmes at the College, each specifically design to assist learners in reaching their next stage in life, whether it be getting a job, living independently or accessing the community.

Programmes are supported by trained and qualified staff and tailored to fit the young person's abilities and support requirements. These programmes are funded by social services or a personalised budget.

Progression into independent or supported living

Bridge programme

The Bridge Programme is designed for young people who have finished their education and want to focus on progressing into independent or supported living.

Young people live in our accommodation and access College facilities and activities. With support to plan their time from a key worker young people can:

  • plan their daily routines, e.g. shopping, laundry and cleaning
  • plan and manage their free time
  • plan and manage weekly menus
  • develop and practice mobility and community travel skills
  • access the local community
  • develop employment skills through work placements

This programme can be funded directly through social services or a personalised budget and offers a stepping stone between home, a residential school or college and supported/ independent living.

During the programme young people work with their key worker and other professionals to identify appropriate future accommodation and to plan a smooth transition at the end of the programme.

Progression for learners with a personal budget

Flexible futures

Our Flexible Futures programme is designed for young people with a personal budget. Flexibility is built into the programme to suit individual interests and support levels.

Making the most of the College enterprises, programmes are planned and organised to develop skills for the future. Young people have the opportunity to practice independence skills in a realistic adult environment and in the local community.

Flexible Futures is made up from the following elements which are available from as little as one day per week for a half-term:

  • College enterprises - take part in working in one of our lively enterprises including our café, eBay shop, College Shop and Arts Centre

  • Community activities - practice communication or numeracy skills with a shopping trip, be healthy with outdoor games and sport activities
  • Independent living skills - develop and maintain important independent living skills in our specialist accommodation
  • Overnight stays - stay in our residential accommodation as a stepping stone to supported or independent living
