Running in fancy dress
"Myself and my wife are both registered visually impaired and we both ran Great North Run in fancy dress. I ran dressed as 'Braveheart', complete with full-size shield, blue face paint, kilt and wig.
"My main problem was training. As it is dangerous for me on busy roads, most of my training is done on the treadmill at work or home. At the weekend I usually run outside along the 'Derwent Walk' which is a country park walk where the only traffic to contend with is pedestrians and the odd horse!
"Because of my costume, I had to train with weights on my wrists to get my body ready to run while carrying a brass-and-wood shield. Both myself and Dawn would like to thank all the RNIB staff who were with us on the day. We had a fabulous time and thoroughly look forward to the next one!"
