Talk it through
We have a team of regionally based RNIB Wills and Legacies Advisors who offer confidential and impartial advice to anyone who wants to make or update their Will or leave a legacy to RNIB. If you need help finding a Will writing professional with Wills at favourable rates, your regional Advisor has details of the RNIB Directory of Will Writing Services.
Preparation
Being prepared can save you time and money, so before you visit a Will writing professional there are a few important things you should consider:
-
Estimate the value of your estate. Draw up one list with the current value of everything you own (your assets) and another of all your debts (your liabilities). If your estate is worth more than the current threshold it could be liable to Inheritance Tax.
-
Decide who you want to include. Gifts can be anything you own and can take the form of specific items, cash amounts or a percentage of your estate.
-
Leaving a gift to charity. Many people do not realise they can continue supporting the causes which are important to them by leaving a gift to charity. Gifts to charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax.
-
Choose who you want to be executors and guardians for your children, if appropriate.
-
Take essential information with you. Take a list of the full names and addresses of everyone you want to benefit from your Will.

Please note that areas of the law relating to Wills can be different in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Your Will writing professional will be able to advise you on this.
