I am drafting a Will for a client. What wording should I use?
You can find the suggested clauses on our essential Will writing information page.
What information do you require?
This will depend on the type of legacy. You may find our Legacy administration guide helpful or alternatively contact our Legacy Administration Team to discuss. If you are able to supply a copy of the Will, this will enable us to be as specific and accurate as possible.
What if the legacy is a property or shares?
We are able to provide you with support and advice if you are dealing with a property or shares, including preferential rates of commission on sales and advice on tax. Please contact our Legacy Administration Team with the nature of a bequest, with a valuation if applicable, and we can work with you to make sure the maximum value is achieved.
What about tax?
RNIB as a registered charity enjoys exemptions from Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, and there are many ways in which tax can be saved during the administration of an estate to make a legacy worth even more to us. Please contact our Legacy Administration Team as early as you can so that we can help with this.
My client is blind or partially sighted - do you have any information that would help me?
Our guide, Writing Wills for blind and partially sighted people, contains practical advice on what you, as a professional advisor, can do to make life easier for blind and partially sighted clients.
Can RNIB act as an executor for my client?
Most people generally appoint a friend, family member or firm of solicitors as executors. However, in some circumstances, RNIB is able to act as an executor.
What percentage of RNIB's income is spent on administration?
For every pound that comes into RNIB from all sources, we spend 87p directly helping blind and partially sighted people, so your client can be sure that their donation is going where it matters most. Find out more about our work.
Can my client restrict their legacy to a specific area of work?
We prefer it if gifts are made unconditionally, as we want to make sure we can use any gifts left in Wills where we need it most in the future. However, if your client does want their gift to go towards a specific service or area of our work please ask them to state this as a preference rather than a condition. Remember that if your client leaves a specific gift, its value will reduce over time, so they may want to think about index-linking it. Please contact the Legacy Administration team for further advice.
My client would like to leave a gift to RNIB's Sunshine Fund
RNIB opened its first Sunshine Home for Blind Babies in 1918, expanded its services to care for blind children in Sunshine House Schools and today runs Sunshine House School and Children's Home in Northwood, Middlesex; RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning in Coventry and RNIB College Loughborough, helping blind and partially sighted children and young people with significant learning difficulties and disabilities reach their potential in safe and supportive environments.
If your client wishes to leave a legacy to RNIB's Sunshine Fund, it would be helpful if the gift could be left to RNIB, with an expressed wish that it will be used in connection with our specialist educational provision.
Could my client visit a project to learn more about your work?
RNIB supporters are invited to come and join us at selected venues across the UK to hear more about the vital work we do to help blind and partially sighted people find their lives again. Find out more about our supporter receptions.
Can people make donations to RNIB in lieu of flowers at a funeral?
Yes - your client can order specially designed funeral collection envelopes by completing RNIB's in memory donation envelopes order form, contacting us on 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) or emailing a request to fundraising@rnib.org.uk.
Can my client give in memory to RNIB?
Yes - it can be comforting to celebrate the life of a loved one by making a donation to charity in their memory. You can donate in memory online - alternatively, you can email us at fundraising@rnib.org.uk or talk to us on 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).
Do you have any examples of how legacies have been used?

Do you provide a list of solicitors to your supporters?
RNIB's Directory of Will Writing Services consists of solicitors and Will writers who have agreed to support RNIB by offering to write simple Wills at a favourable rate for RNIB supporters and services users.
