Laura: I'm Laura Hughes and mum to Tiri aged 8. Tiri: I've got double elevator palsy, I've got long sight, astigmatism, I've got a squint in my right eye and lots more. But it doesn't stop me from doing anything. Laura: We immediately realised the first thing that was going to be difficult was reading. Her reading development was so fast that before long she had grown out of the books with the big print and needed books with smaller print. At the transcription centre we have had all sorts of things enlarged for her that wouldn't be available otherwise. Last Christmas RNIB enlarged the Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit game instructions for her which she has played very happily since then (usually dressed in her Hermeoni costume). And for her birthday we bought her a game called Uno which she loves but again the instructions were absolutely tiny. Tiri: They were so tiny that cards did start shooting everywhere and Mum sent the instructions to RNIB and they came back about five days later and they were in large print which meant I could play the game without cards shooting everywhere. Laura: Since Tiri was four and began to read and play music, RNIB has really come into its own in helping us. Tiri: The music that I read is in large print as I can't see most music in small print and RNIB make pretty much all of my music bigger which means I can play any music I like thanks to RNIB. Laura: As well as the transcription services we have used the various advice services particularly about IT and also they have very good catalogues about equipment. One of the things that was particularly important was getting her a watch she could see which I hadn't even thought about until we were in a Father Christmas grotto and Father Christmas said 'Ho Ho Ho and what do you want for Christmas' and Tiri just looked up at him and said 'I want a watch I can see properly' and I found myself outside almost in tears because this is one of the things I had overlooked and hadn't thought about, it was about four days before Christmas and I rushed home phoned up RNIB, they sent me a catalogue and they got a large print watch to the North Pole in time for Christmas to pop in her stocking on Christmas morning and there it was and she is still using it. Tiri: I think they are going to help me when I get older because when I go to secondary school there aren't as far as I know hardly any text books and if we can't get them I know RNIB will make them larger for me if we can't get them to go on a computer. Thank you RNIB for all the work you have done for me and thank you to everyone that has helped me.
