Visual contrast between surfaces is important to help partially sighted people distinguish between them. This applies to all objects or surfaces that people need to locate (e.g. signage, doors, seating) or avoid (e.g. columns, bollards, walls). In rail vehicles, buses and coaches it is a legal requirement to have visual contrast between certain surfaces. In buildings and streets it is preferred, especially where there is a safety implication.
We provide a visual contrast assessment process whereby a client provides samples of existing or proposed finishes or colour references based on internationally recognised colour referencing systems (e.g. Dulux, NCS, pantone, RAL).
We assess the level of visual contrast using one of two methods. The first is a visual method known as a colour-matching exercise. The second method is using a colourimeter. Both methods have a similar level of accuracy.
A short report is provided, detailing the method used, the light reflectance value measured and the result.
