Frequently asked questions about Read for RNIB Day

Read for RNIB Day facts

What is Read for RNIB Day?

Read for RNIB Day is a great way to raise funds for RNIB - and celebrate reading! All we ask you to do is hold a reading-themed event with friends, family or work colleagues. Stuck on which event to choose? Why not look at our event ideas?

When is it?

Read for RNIB Day is Friday 11 October 2013, but your event can be on any date that suits. We want to get a real buzz going and have everyone talking about reading, and why it matters so much that everyone can enjoy it.

Who can take part?

Anyone! You don't have to be a real bookworm, it's for everyone - young and old alike.

If you are a school, let us know in the registration form and you'll receive one of our special Alice in Wonderland schools' fundraising packs.

How do I take part?

To organise an event, register online, email us at fundraising@rnib.org.uk or call us on 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

How do schools win a visit from author Darren Shan or a year's supply of Walker children's books?

Any school participating in Read for RNIB Day will be entered into a prize draw to win a visit from top children's author, Darren Shan or a year's supply of Walker children's books. The draw will take place on Monday 16 December 2013.

For more information, read our competition terms and conditions, email us at fundraising@rnib.org.uk or call 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

How do I hold a Read for RNIB Day event?

It's really easy to set up your own event, even if you've never done it before. We can send you a fundraising pack full of ideas, hints and tips. Just register here for yours.

Where should I hold it?

You could hold the event at your home, school, workplace, club or in a local hall. You could take part with your friends on Facebook too. Search for Read for RNIB Day on Facebook and like our page to join the fun online.

How do I raise money?

There are lots of ways to raise money, from charging an entrance fee to selling refreshments or holding competitions and raffles. Look for more suggestions in the kit, or why not go wild with your own ideas?

Can I request more fundraising materials?

Yes, of course. If you need additional fundraising items for your Read for RNIB Day event such as balloons or bookmarks, we will be happy to send extra (subject to availability). Just email fundraising@rnib.org.uk or call 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

Do I have to raise a minimum amount?

No, any amount at all is welcome - it's great just to have you join in. But it's a good idea to have a target to aim for. Of course if you raise even more that's brilliant.

  • £50 will pay for a birthday book, so we can send every child their favourite book in the format they want on their birthday.
  • £100 pays for a full day's recording of Talking Newspapers - audio versions of the daily papers people with sight loss know and love.
  • £125 helps run classes that prepare parents to teach braille to their children.
  • £250 can help buy a BrailleNote machine, so someone with sight loss can read and write on their own again, rather than relying on others.

How do schools keep 20 per cent of funds raised?

Simply collect all your sponsorship, keeping your 20 per cent and send us the rest. For more information, read our terms and conditions for schools.
