Eye conditions

Our information on individual eye conditions is medically checked and is designed to be as useful as possible. We have grouped them, in alphabetical order, into three groups: names beginning with A to C, D to N and O to Z to make them easier to find quickly.

If you wish to use this information for patients and clients, you will find that each page has a link to a printable version. Please feel free to print and photocopy as many copies of the information as you may need.

Eye examinations and diagnosis of eye conditions

Eye examinations details the procedure of visiting an optometrist for an eye test, including having an eye examination at home.

Referral to a hospital for diagnosis provides information on what happens when your optometrist or GP has referred you to an ophthalmologist in your local hospital eye department.

Getting the most from your sight

Looking after your eyes provides information on keeping your eyes healthy and safe.

Much can be done to help people with some vision. Magnifiers, lighting and use of colour can make a big difference. Our Making the most of your remaining sight pages offer for tips on making things easier to see.

If you, or someone you know, has an eye problem and a learning disability, Look Up may be able to help you.

What happens next

Newly diagnosed provides advice and information on coming to terms with your eye condition, and what help and support is available.

If you've recently been diagnosed with a sight problem or even if you've been living with sight loss for some time, read Adapting to sight loss for practical advice to continue living confidently.

Registration as blind or partially sighted can help you get the practical support you need. It can be your "passport" to services, concessions and benefits. However, you do not need to be registered to get help from your social services or social work department.
