Alexia's story

Alexia is ten years old and registered blind. She is a determined little girl and RNIB are helping fuel her ambitions.

Despite losing her sight at the age of two, Alexia already has two GCSE's under her belt and recently won the Onkyo International essay competition for her poem celebrating braille.

Our Talking Book service and braille library have been pivotal in developing Alexia's reading and listening skills. Richard, Alexia's dad is over the moon, "you guys have been really great".

How RNIB helps Alexia

Alexia is an avid reader, "I can probably get through two or three a week'. She loves to read both braille and audio books, making extensive use of our braille and Talking Book libraries.

Given such access to literature has helped fuel Alexia's ambition to become an author, "I couldn't be a writer without them" she says, "because I think that most writers get inspired by reading books."

RNIB's braille library has helped her in her academic ambitions as well, providing her with books in Spanish, which helped the trilingual girl to study for her GCSE Spanish, which she passed with an A* last year.

"I've always loved reading" explains Alexia, "ever since I was little, and without RNIB's Library Service I'd hear other people talking about books and it would really annoy me...I love having the privilege of being able to be transported by a book."

Alexia's recent favourite reads include Aliens Don't Eat Bacon Sandwiches, The Invisible Boy and, of course Harry Potter!

We need your help to fund our vital services for blind and partially sighted people in the UK. Right now we can only reach one in three of the people who need our help most.

Please make a donation and help us reach them all.

A third of our vital work helping people with sight loss is only possible thanks to people continuing their support through a legacy gift. Find out how you can leave a gift to RNIB in your Will.
